Green Door, Bruges

I had a delightful "girls visit" to Bruges one winter and within hours it was on my list of "must return"s. It encompasses everything that appeals to my impressionist's eye: old, rough surfaces, doors, windows, shutters, waterways, windmills, emotional weather and a vibrant life about it. This door, multicoloured with years of touch ups, broken pieces where some story could be told, and the shimmering front door step, constantly damp from passing boats. Who lives here? Why a door on the river? Was it once a lovely front entrance where transport was by boat, or a back door for the receipt of supplies. The story had to be told on canvas. This is one of the many I have painted in this Bruges Series. And there will be more.
